【Exhibition Tour | 导览】 作品《鲸鱼-1-2 The Whale - 1-2》

工作室画廊荣幸地宣布，画廊空间的全新展览《制作》已于8月18日成功开幕，并持续到9月16日结束。此次展览将呈现艺术家顾建在过去十年间最为主要的几件绘画创作。

Studio Gallery's new exhibition "Making" - Gu Jian's solo show unveiled on August 18th. This exhibition presents the most important paintings of the artist in the past 10 years, and it will last till September 16th, 2018.

In order to pass on more details to our audience, we invited artist to make some narration to each artwork in our project space. In the coming week, we will introduce you a piece of work on show everyday. You can also click the link below for more information.

从鲸鱼系列开始我就不再画眼睛了，把笔触上的东西放到绘画的整体上面。没有任何的动笔迹象。所有的东西，要么是喷漆，要么是洗，要么是做底直接形成。就有意识地这么干了。就是把所有动过笔的地方全部消除去掉。

From the beginning of the whale, I started to focus on the entirety of painting, get rid of traces of brushwork, and stop drawing eyes. Everything was either sprayed, washed, or formed directly while making the base layer. I did this consciously, which is removing all the parts that have been drawn on by paint brush.

顾建用刷子作画 | Gu is painting with a brush

对我而言是有区别的。因为你拿着小笔一点点地在那里戳，和拿着大刷子，滚子一遍滚一遍下来，这个概念是不一样的。因为我图这个背景我可以用各种各样的手段，但是画眼睛，我永远拿笔一点点在那戳。所以在画这个的时候唯一的区别是上面的所有效果，这种偶然性存在的东西，就是我前面说过的做底，我把所有的底一次性都做好了。但是在上面画什么？我不知道。这四张有可能原本在上面画的是蜘蛛，螳螂，甚至是地图，包括山脉。为什么变成今天这个样子，我自己也说不清晰。

It’s different for me. Because the concept of poking canvas bit by bit with a tiny paint brush is different from brushing it with a big brush or roller. The background of this painting can be done in many ways, but when it comes to drawing eyes, I will always paint them carefully with a paint brush. So the very uniqueness of this painting is, all the effects above happened just naturally. That’s like the base layer I mentioned before, which was all made at a heat. But on the base layer, what to paint? I did not know. These four paintings may have been painted in the image of spiders, dragonflies or even maps and mountains. Why are they like this today? Even me, I can’t explain clearly by myself.

画这张画的时候多了一道程序。多了一道加沙的程序。《鲸鱼-1》这是第一张，在这张里面一开始就用喷漆了，但是喷漆老是觉得有问题。那怎么办了？一般我们做底无外乎有这样几种途径，传统做底，无外乎加点兔皮胶，白乳胶，明胶，甚至各种添加剂。我在这几种比较流行的做底方式里又加入了各种成分。比如说，我用白乳胶，我会把其它的胶混合在里面，看会不会产生裂变反应。在胶里是否可以加墨汁，加水，加丙烯，加油画，反正只要能想到的都往里面加。

When I painted this painting, there’s one more procedure added, which was to mix sand in the paint. 《The Whale – 1》 This was the first piece. In this one, I used spray paint at the beginning, but always felt that there was a problem with the spray. So what should I do? 《The Whale – 2》 Traditionally, there are nothing more than these ways to prep a canvas: adding rabbit skin glue, white glue, gelatin, and even other additives on. However, I added some other ingredients in these traditional materials.For example, I used white glue mixed with other glue to see if there would be any cracking. Whether ink, water, acrylic and oil paint can be added in the glue was also in my consideration. Actually, I would try things as long as I could think of. 

我在白乳胶里加了盐，我发现加了盐之后，画面上会有金银透亮的感觉。金光闪闪的效果，像金子一样。这是无意形成的效果。在这上面进行喷漆的话，会产生颗粒状的效果。因为喷漆是大面积地，平均化地喷。当你画面上出现大量的颗粒状物体的时候，会出现凹凸不平。这种凹凸不平会让画面出现一种微妙的粗糙感。这个鲸鱼上，就莫名其妙地产生了这种粗糙感。

Once, I added salt to the white glue. Turned out after adding salt, an effect of crystal clear appeared, glowing like gold. This is unintended. And grainy effect appeared when I sprayed paints on it, over a large area. Irregularity was created by a lot of granular objects on the painting, showing a sense of subtle roughness. On this whale, this kind of roughness was unexpectedly produced.

这种粗糙感加完之后。这个地方我开始拿喷漆喷完之后刷了一道。拿松香水洗了一道。因为喷完之后一定会产生一个“v”子状的形状。所以洗了一部分。洗完之后就这个东西（画面）感觉很像鲸鱼。但是感觉像鲸鱼就把这个东西留下了（停下来了）。这个是白色喷漆，看起来像黄色，因为放得太久，变成淡黄的颜色。由来就有意识地（往鲸鱼的方向）用喷漆喷了一下，还用了一点脱胶剂。所以会形成今天的效果。

After the roughness was added, I started to spray the white paint on 《The Whale – 1》. Then it was partly washed by rosin water because spraying produced a definite shape of "v". After washing, this thing (painting) made me think of whale, so I left it (stopped painting). They were supposed to be white but look yellowish now because of the long time. Based on that, I consciously sprayed the paint (in the shape of whale) with a little degumming agent. That’s how the effect was formed as we’re seeing today.
